No question is too small
Frequently asked questions
▸Who can join Pack 49?
Any child 5 years old to 5th grade, of any gender, from any school or neighborhood. Our roots are at Pacific Primary, but the pack is open to every San Francisco family.
▸Do we need any scouting or outdoors experience?
None at all. Most of our families are brand new to scouting, and plenty of us wouldn't call ourselves outdoorsy (yet). Every activity is beginner-friendly by design.
▸What's the time commitment?
Less than you'd think. Expect a regular meeting or activity roughly a couple of times a month, plus optional bigger adventures like campouts. Busy season at work or a packed sports schedule? Come when you can — there's no attendance requirement.
▸How much does it cost?
There's an annual registration fee from Scouting America plus modest pack costs for activities and supplies. Email us for current numbers — and cost should never keep a family out of scouting, so please talk to us if it's a concern.
▸Do parents drop kids off, or stay?
Cub Scouting is family scouting — a parent or caregiver participates alongside their child, especially in the younger grades. It's honestly half the fun: you'll be at the campfire making friends too.
▸Is it safe? Who leads the activities?
Pack activities are run by registered adult volunteers who complete Scouting America's Youth Protection Training and background checks, with strict two-adult supervision rules at every activity.
▸My kid is shy / high-energy / not a 'joiner.' Will they fit in?
Very likely, yes. Scouting is built for mixed groups of real kids — there's room to lead, room to hang back, and lots of different ways to shine. Come try a meeting; kids usually find their footing fast.
▸Do we have to buy a uniform right away?
No. Come to your first few meetings in whatever's comfortable. If your child joins, their uniform is included in their registration!
▸What if we miss a campout or a season?
Life happens — kids advance at their own pace in Cub Scouts, and there's no falling behind. Jump back in whenever you're ready.
▸How do we try it out?
Just show up to any event on the calendar — regular pack meetings are at Pacific Primary. Or email cubmaster@pack49sf.org and we'll make sure someone's looking out for you.
Something we didn't cover? Email cubmaster@pack49sf.org — a real parent will write back.
