About Cub Scouting
Cub Scouting is Scouting America's program for kids in 5 years old to 5th grade — and their families. For over a century it's been built around a simple idea: kids grow best through hands-on adventure, shared with friends, guided by caring adults.
It's family scouting: parents aren't spectators, they're participants. You'll be at the campfire too. And today's Cub Scouting is for all genders — boys and girls adventure side by side.
No experience needed. No outdoorsy credentials required. The program meets every kid — and every parent — exactly where they are.
What kids actually do
Adventures outdoors
Hikes, campouts, fishing, stargazing — kid-sized doses of the outdoors, with family along for all of it.
Make & race things
The legendary Pinewood Derby, plus rockets, forts, knots, and gadgets. Kids design it, build it, and try it.
Earn adventures
Cub Scouts earn badges by trying new things — first aid, cooking, coding, camping. Every kid advances at their own pace.
Help their city
Service is baked in: park cleanups, food drives, flag ceremonies. Kids learn their actions matter.
Why it matters
Confidence
Small challenges — lighting a first campfire, speaking in front of the pack — build real self-belief.
Friendship
A built-in crew that shows up week after week, year after year. Many scouting friendships last a lifetime.
Health & wellness
Physical activity, time outside, and social connection — the same things pediatricians recommend for growing kids.
Character
The Scout Law is a mouthful for a kindergartner, but 'be kind, be brave, be helpful' sinks in through practice.
